College Prep ~ English 9 ASSIGNMENT due 5/14

Great Expectations  character/setting

One of the first things Pip sees after his arrival in London is the terrible gallows of Newgate Prison, which gives Pip “a sickening idea of London”.

  • what might this scene represent as far as a theme of the novel is concerned?
  • what might this setting be a reminder of for Pip?
  • do you think Pip is initially “disappointed” with this first impression of London?

please answer each of the three parts of this question in complete sentences and make sure to cite evidence from the text.

this assignment is due Tuesday, May 14th
